The text of the carol is based on a 'Hymn for Christmas-Day' published on pp. 516-517 of the Gentleman's Magazine for November 1748. Vol. 18, No. 11. , with the attribution 'The Words by Mr OATS. of Devonshire'. Verses 1 and 2 of the text given by Stephenson are similar to the corresponding verses in the Gentleman's Magazine text. which has five verses in total. Stephenson's verse 3 is not derived from any of the Gentleman's Magazine verses.
