The text of the predominately lyrical, expressive, gentle-sounding oratorio is based on the Latin liturgy of Christmas which is oriented towards Catholic ritual. The work, composed in 1860, which meanwhile is also well known in Germany, shows its classicistic characteristics right from the beginning. "Prelude, dans le style de Seb. Bach". The orchestra is limited to strings, harp and organ, and the choral parts have neither a wide range, nor are they difficult. In the orchestra the obbligato harp plays in only two of the 10 movements of the work, usually together with the organ. If a harp is not available, technically this part can be played by the organ.

De tekst van de overwegend lyrisch, expressief, zacht klinkende oratorium is gebaseerd op de Latijnse liturgie van Kerstmis, die is gericht op katholieke ritueel. Het werk, gecomponeerd in 1860, die ook bekend is ondertussen in Duitsland, toont zijn classicistische kenmerken van bij het begin. "Prelude, in de stijl van Seb. Bach". Het orkest is beperkt tot strijkers, harp en orgel, en de koorpartijen noch een breed aanbod, noch zijn ze moeilijk. In het orkest speelt de obligaat harp in slechts twee van de 10 bewegingen van het werk, meestal samen met het orgel. Als een harp niet beschikbaar is, kan technisch gezien dit deel worden gespeeld door het orgel.
