Some forty settings of the four Marian antiphons by Johann Michael Haydn are extant, among them 17 settings of the Salve Regina. The Salve Regina in B flat MH 90, here published for the first time, dates from about 1765, and it survives in a contemporary manuscript copy at Gottweig in Lower Austria. This early composition by Haydn already bears witness to this talent for setting a liturgical text to music. The dialogue between the bass soloist and the choir gives this work a radiance of its own.

Zo'n veertig instellingen van de vier Maria-antifonen van Johann Michael Haydn zijn nog bestaande, onder hen 17 instellingen van het Salve Regina. Het Salve Regina in Bes MH 90, hier gepubliceerd voor de eerste keer, dateert uit ongeveer 1765, en het overleeft in een eigentijdse manuscript bij Gottweig in Neder-Oostenrijk. Deze vroege samenstelling van Haydn al getuigt dit talent voor het instellen van een liturgische tekst op muziek. De dialoog tussen de bas solist en het koor geeft dit werk een uitstraling van zijn eigen.
