Silent Durations I was written for the French piano vituoso Catherine Schneider. These Silent Duration pieces are notable for their incorporation of silence as an integral part of the compositional fabric. This first of the over forty Silent Duration pieces has a story. In August 2003 I was standing in front of the 4000 CD collection - there are all styles, all periods, you name it. I felt like hearing something but wasnât sure what. After a few minutes gazing at the massive number of CDs I began to feel somewhat ridiculous that I couldnât find a cd that I felt like listening to. After a while I took the DAT, sat down at the piano, started the recorder and played exactly what I wanted. After ten minutes I listened to the playback and liked what I heard. The transcribed version of this improvisation became the first movement of Silent Durations I. Later I added a second and third movement. While playing I had the sensation that my hands would find their way to the piano when they wanted and I did my best to avoid imposing when they should play.
