Romanza was written as a ballad for the composer's wife. The initial theme is introduced in the first two bars, with a descending woodwind line. Following this the chorale-like theme returns in the cor anglais and horn. The theme is then repeated, but this time in a close harmony setting in a minor key. Then comes the second theme, which is extremely melodious. All the sections of the band complement each other in rendering this theme in its entirety. This second theme launches a development that ultimately reaches a climax based on the last four bars of the first theme, after which the theme returns once more, though this time as a solemn chorale by the brass. The finale of the work is a variant of the beginning, thus completing the circle.

Romanza is geschreven als een ballad voor de vrouw van de componist. De eerste thema wordt geïntroduceerd in de eerste twee bars, met een aflopende houtblazers lijn. Na deze het koraal-achtige thema keert terug in de althobo en hoorn. Het thema wordt dan herhaald, maar dit keer in een close harmony instelling in mineur. Dan komt het tweede thema, dat is zeer melodieus. Alle secties van de band vullen elkaar op waardoor dit thema in zijn geheel. Dit tweede thema lanceert een ontwikkeling die uiteindelijk een climax op basis van de laatste vier maten van het eerste thema, waarna de thema terugkeert opnieuw bereikt, maar dit keer als een plechtig koraal door de koper. De finale van het werk is een variant van het begin, waardoor de voltooiing van de cirkel.
