Northern Lights was created for a student who broke her right pinkie. It can be played either with the left hand alone or with both hands, but the fingering reflects left hand only. In this piece, I recall from my childhood seeing a Roman candle-like episode of brilliant sparkling light shooting up into the night sky. The opening theme is reminiscent of this glorious beauty. It is echoed in the second theme, a series of beautiful and carefully organized arpeggios, carefully notated fingering to achieve them smoothly.
