Deo Gratias was begun in a hotel room at about 4. 30AM in Rome during a St. Cyril Choir Tour in April of 2007. It was one of those rare instances when the composer woke up with a compositional idea in his head and actually got up and started to work. The next few days were spent developing the idea and finishing the entire work after returning home to Van Nuys, California. The over-all mood of the piece is that it should be mesmerizing with its slow undulations and long crescendos with following subito pianos for dramatic effect. The piece has an interesting mix of changing meters throughout. however, the basic eighth note value never changes except for the occasional ritard. The entire text consists of Deo Gratias. Het was een van die zeldzame gevallen waarin de componist werd wakker met een compositorische idee in zijn hoofd en eigenlijk stond op en begon te werken. De volgende dagen werden besteed aan het ontwikkelen van het idee en afwerking van het hele werk na thuiskomst naar Van Nuys, Californië. De over-all sfeer van het stuk is dat het fascinerend met zijn trage golvingen en lange crescendo met de volgende subito piano's voor een dramatisch effect zou moeten zijn. Het stuk heeft een interessante mix van veranderende meter in heel. Echter, de basis achtste noot waarde verandert nooit, behalve voor de occasionele RITARD.
