This striking arrangement of this Gounod favourite sees the piece arranged for Double Bass and Piano by A. Wilson-Dickson. The music in the beginning tells the listener that two of the members of the Marionette troupe have had a duel and one of them has been killed. A party of pallbearers is organised and the procession sets out for the cemetery in march time. The music soon takes on a more cheerful spirit, for some of the troupe, wearied with the march, seek consolation at a wayside inn, where they refresh themselves and also descant upon the many virtues of their late companion. At last they get into place again and the procession enters the cemetery to the march rhythm -- the whole closing with the bars intended to reflect upon the briefness and weariness of life, even for marionettes.

Deze opvallende arrangement van dit Gounod favoriete ziet het stuk geregeld voor contrabas en piano door A. Wilson-Dickson. De muziek in het begin vertelt de luisteraar dat twee van de leden van de Marionette troupe een duel hebben gehad en een van hen is vermoord. Een partij van pallbearers wordt georganiseerd en zet de stoet zich uit voor de begraafplaats maart de tijd. De muziek neemt al snel op een meer vrolijke geest, voor een deel van het gezelschap, vermoeid met de mars, zoeken troost bij een herberg langs de weg, waar ze zich te verfrissen en ook Descant op de vele deugden van hun overleden metgezel. Eindelijk krijgen ze op hun plaats opnieuw en de processie gaat de begraafplaats aan de mars ritme - de gehele afsluiting met de bars bedoeld om na te denken over de kortheid en de vermoeidheid van het leven, zelfs voor marionetten.
