The concept for the piece was to explore ways of creating a sense of sustain on four marimbas through extensive use of stretto and imitation. Rather than approaching an ensemble such as this in a traditional choral configuration of soprano, alto, tenor and bass, this piece focuses on keeping most of the musical activity within the same register. All four voices serve as equal members of one collective image. Vespertine Formations is dedicated to Harold Jones who was the professor of percussion at East Carolina University for many years. The motivation for this work comes from a phenomenon in nature. It is a common sight to see huge flocks of birds performing amazing aerial maneuvers in the evening sky over North Texas especially in the Autumn. The ornitholigical sky forms witnessed during one particular sunset in Fall of 2001 served as an undeniable point of inspiration during the compositional process for this piece. The wing motions of so many birds suggested the texture of constant sixteenth notes. As the brilliant orange sunset diminished to dusk, the birds settled into trees around the campus. The fantastic choreography created by this flock of birds and the natural chronology of events guided the structure and form of this piece.

Het concept voor het stuk was naar manieren van het creëren van een gevoel van sustain in vier marimba door uitgebreid gebruik van stretto en imitatie verkennen. In plaats van het naderen van een ensemble, zoals dit in een traditionele koor configuratie van sopraan, alt, tenor en bas, dit stuk is gericht op het houden van het grootste deel van de muzikale activiteit in hetzelfde register. Alle vier stemmen dienen als gelijkwaardige leden van een collectieve beeld. Vespertine formaties is gewijd aan Harold Jones die de professor slagwerk aan East Carolina University was jarenlang. De motivatie voor dit werk komt uit een natuurverschijnsel. Het is een gemeenschappelijk gezicht om grote zwermen vogels uitvoeren verbazingwekkende luchtfoto manoeuvres zien aan de avondhemel boven Noord-Texas vooral in de herfst. De ornitholigical hemel vormen getuige tijdens een bijzondere zonsondergang in de herfst van 2001 diende als een onmiskenbaar punt van inspiratie tijdens het compositorische proces voor dit stuk. De vleugel bewegingen van zoveel vogels suggereerde de textuur van constante zestiende noten. Zoals de briljante oranje zonsondergang verminderd tot zonsondergang, de vogels geregeld in bomen rond de campus. De fantastische choreografie die door deze zwerm vogels en de natuurlijke chronologie van de gebeurtenissen geleid de structuur en de vorm van dit stuk.
