She heard in the piece feelings of loneliness, and also nostalgia for autumn in Japan, an appropriate description of what I wanted to express in the work. The fragile vocalise, a wordless melody, has two main themes. a simple, plaintive melody depicting solitude which begins and ends the piece, and a second melody which is more ominous in nature, combining Chopinâs Funeral March. from his Piano Sonata No.2. with sounds of taunting and teasing, as children are prone to do.
