Published by Drake Mabry Productions. S0.10948. Concerto for Dorothee is a commission by the dÃsseldorf festival. with funds from the Kunststiftung NRW. It was written for the recorder virtuoso Dorothee Oberlinger and was premiered by her with the Italian ensemble, Sonatori De La Gioiosa Marca at the Dusseldorf Festival. on September 19, 2012. The twelve minute work is in two complimentary movements. The first is a lament inspired by the emotions invoked in Arianna's Lament by Monteverdi. There are moments when the recorder plays alone and other times when it has gentle and quiet accompanying support from members of the ensemble. This plaintiff voice searches for understanding before finding it's response in the final few bars. But the musical material here is only a transformation of the opening bars â“ the understanding was actually always there. The second movement is a virtuoso perpetual motion with the ensemble commenting on the virtuoso recorder lines much like a Greek choir might have done. But here the interventions occur more in the manner of either lightning bolts or sometimes as a soft breeze. There is musical material shared between the two movements, sometimes as a quote but more often transformed into a new language but always organic in nature. This is a piece that is somewhat of a time machine that mixes the old and new. I have certainly brought some conventions of Baroque practice towards today and taken some of today's practices towards the Baroque. I wrote this while I was in Istanbul playing ney and painting with the ebru technique. That probably explains why this piece is more horizontal. with polyphony. than vertical. with harmony. Knowing the playing of both the soloist and the ensemble, I wrote Concerto for Dorothee throwing all care to the wind and I send my gratitude and appreciation to everyone concerned for joining me in this new adventure. De twaalf minuten werk is in twee gratis bewegingen. De eerste is een klaagzang geïnspireerd door de emoties van Monteverdi in Arianna's Lament ingeroepen. Er zijn momenten dat de recorder speelt alleen en de andere keer wanneer het zachtmoedige en stille begeleidende steun van de leden van het ensemble. Dit eiser stem zoekt naar begrip voor het vinden van het antwoord in de laatste paar bars. Maar het muzikale materiaal is hier slechts een transformatie van de beginmaten â "het begrip was er eigenlijk altijd. Het tweede deel is een virtuoos eeuwigdurende beweging met het ensemble commentaar op de virtuoze recorder lijnen net als een Grieks koor zou hebben gedaan. Maar hier interventies meer op de wijze van hetzij blikseminslag of soms optreden als zachte wind. Er is muzikale materiaal gedeeld tussen de twee bewegingen, soms als een citaat, maar vaker omgezet in een nieuwe taal, maar altijd organisch van aard. Dit is een stuk dat is iets van een tijdmachine die de oude en nieuwe mixen. Ik heb zeker een aantal conventies van barok praktijk gebracht naar vandaag en meegenomen sommige praktijken van vandaag naar de Barok. Ik schreef dit terwijl ik in Istanbul speelt ney en schilderen met de Ebru-techniek. Dat verklaart waarschijnlijk waarom dit stuk is meer horizontaal. met polyfonie. dan verticale. met harmonie. Het kennen van de spelen van zowel de solist en het ensemble, schreef ik Concerto voor Dorothee gooien alle zorg aan de wind en ik stuur mijn dank en waardering aan alle betrokkenen voor het samenvoegen van mij in dit nieuwe avontuur.
