Cherubini's "Marche funebre" is in the tradition of the funeral music of the French Revolution. The work was composed in 1820 on the occasion of the solemn funeral services for Charles Ferdinand of Bourbon, the Duke of Berry, who was the victim of an assassination when leaving the Paris Opera. In the piece the regular, penetrating beat of the tam tams and the drum roll which follows, the dark-sounding colors and the painful dissonances leave their mark on the funeral march, which suggests that for a performance this work could be combined with either of Cherubini's settings of the Requiem text.

Cherubini's "Marche funebre" is in de traditie van de begrafenis muziek van de Franse Revolutie. Het werk werd gecomponeerd in 1820 ter gelegenheid van de plechtige begrafenis van diensten voor Charles Ferdinand van Bourbon, de hertog van Berry, die het slachtoffer van een moord bij het verlaten van de Opera van Parijs was. In het stuk van de reguliere, doordringende ritme van de tam tams en het tromgeroffel, die volgt, de donkere klinkende kleuren en de pijnlijke dissonanten hun stempel drukken op de treurmars, wat suggereert dat voor een optreden dit werk kan worden gecombineerd met een van beide instellingen van het Requiem tekst Cherubini's.
