Variants on an English Carol is based on the old English carol, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen. The first variation features the flutes and bells. The second variation is a scherzando style in six-eight which features the alto saxophones and optional horns and tenor saxophones, plus some unique instrumental colors and harmonies. The third and final variation is a majestic statement of the carol tune in a triple canon which closes with a full band statement and a quiet ending spotlighting the flutes, clarinets and bells reminiscent of the first variation.
