Rossini retired from a highly successful and lucrative career as an opera composer before he was 40 years of age, and although he lived almost another 40 years he wrote very little more music except for some short Piano pieces of a dance-like nature that he called Sins of Old Age. In 1919 Respighi gathered many of these pieces together and orchestrated them for the ever-popular ballet La Boutique Fantasque. This String Quartet is the first of two medleys arranged by Carlo Martelli that includes music from the ballet.

Rossini afscheid heeft genomen van een zeer succesvolle en lucratieve carrière als operacomponist voordat hij 40 jaar oud was, en hoewel hij leefde bijna nog 40 jaar schreef hij heel wat meer muziek met uitzondering van enkele korte pianostukken van een dans-achtige natuur die hij noemde zonden van de ouderdom. In 1919 verzamelde Respighi veel van deze stukken bij elkaar en georkestreerd ze voor de immer populaire ballet La Boutique Fantasque. Dit String Quartet is de eerste van twee medleys geregeld door Carlo Martelli dat muziek bevat van het ballet.
