Pastorale, & III. Il Ponte di Londra) are quite different from one another in tempo and character, providing an engaging balance of stylistic variety.My goal in writing this sonata was to bring to a purely instrumental piece, the idiomatic melodic flow of the vocal and choral repertoire which inspire my enduring fondness (genres which comprise the majority of my work as a composer). The bassoon seemed ideal, because its elegantly lyrical and expressive personality was, and still is, so rarely celebrated by contemporary composers. I wanted to provide bassoonists with a fresh, appealing addition to their solo repertoire in the form of a sonata with an undeniably contemporary voice, yet still eminently listenable and unpretentious.My Sonata for Bassoon & Piano is a musically rewarding experience for both the audience and the players, offering elegantly crafted, contrasting yet complimentary vignettes of energetic rhythmic sophistication, soaring melodies paired with subtly poignant harmonies, and even a dash of wit and whimsy.You can listen to the entire sonata performed by David Ross, with the composer at the piano, on YouTube at this URL: http://youtu.be/WMr08oXos28 (Movement II begins at 3:56 & Movement III at 9:50.)
