The opera 'Carmen' is widely recognized as the 'perfect' opera - the plot makes sense, the music is hit melody after hit melody, and the staging can almost never fail to be ravishing.
It is surely unbelievable that this opera's first performance bombed. Nevertheless, the humble composer got ill and died within a couple of weeks - and THEN the opera was a smash hit. And has been ever since.
The overture is as festive as any, and everybody knows the Toreador-theme.
