A fun cakewalk style piece from Debussy, penned in 1909 for solo piano.
Debussy's original title for this piece is one that would not be given today. The piece was written in a time of often overt racism where people of colour were stereotyped and mocked as objects of curiosity. However, we feel that Debussy's recognised love of embracing musical styles from many cultures suggests that here he is celebrating the new rhythms being heard in American Ragtime music. Here at dots 4 strings, we do find ourselves uncomfortable with the title, but believe that in the modern context of learning and discussion, we can enjoy this quirky little piece.
